Mark James
Although becoming serious as an artist at a later stage of life, Mark fell in love with drawing and with Coastal Native Form line art in his early years as a Lummi Nation enrolled member from Bellingham Washington. Mark grew up in Seattle where he attended high school and graduated from the University of Washington.
He always enjoyed the creative side of drawing portraits, and then later the Coastal Native Form line art style. With life’s priorities of a career and family, his artist side fell dormant over the next thirty years.
Fortunately, with the help and encouragement of his wife Jozette, Mark recently rededicated himself to exploring his artistic side, redeveloping his artistic skills and a deeper knowledge of the form line craft. This has resulted in a better understanding of his heritage and the Native Coastal form line style, which his work represents.
Several years ago, on a visit with his wife to Hawaii, Mark fell in love with the beauty and spirit of Hawaii and began incorporating it into his pieces. He loves the Form line style and the flexibility it allows to incorporate other cultures and styles of art. The artist hopes pieces he produces will inspire or stir emotions within those who view.
